About the Name

Donahoo School was a one-room schoolhouse completed in 1914 and named after Silas King Donahoo, an African American immigrant from Oklahoma. Not much is known about him, except that his door was open to anyone passing by, and he was instrumental in providing an educational space that benefitted local families for decades.

When our family immigrated from Sweden to Alberta in the 1920s, all the kids attended Donahoo School. And it still stands.

We chose this name to honour that spirit of openness and community. Just as Mr. Donahoo welcomed everyone, we aim to tell stories that welcome all audiences into a celebration of our shared humanity.

Here’s a picture of us with our Great Grandmother, Anna Myrholm, on the farm. Our cousin (in the red onesie) still works the land today.

Donahoo Story Co. was founded by brothers Jeremy and Jake Bergen. They are not only creative partners but also direct descendants of Swedish settlers (the Myrholm and Erikson families) who helped build the community in their stories. This unique position allows them to bridge the gap between rigorous historical research, deep personal connection, and compelling cinematic storytelling.

Jeremy Bergen

Co-Founder | Writer & Lead Researcher

Jeremy’s main roles are research, story development, and writing. His work as a tax accountant for over 25 years has given him a disciplined approach to facts and a relentless drive for accuracy. He can see a path through complex situations to help people calmly navigate reality. This project has the same purpose, just on a bigger scale.

As a tax accountant, he can make you laugh or cry with numbers. As a writer, he can do the same with words. Jeremy is also a master of the "delete" key, ensuring every scene earns its place in the story.

Jake Bergen

Co-Founder | Creative Director & Community Lead

Jake specializes in translating intricate concepts into compelling visual stories. With over a decade of experience in film production and digital creative for global brands, he knows how to make a story resonate.

Jake leads the community engagement strategy as well as being a script editor. He has traveled to collect stories from descendants, initiated relationships with historical societies and local governments, and cultivated key connections within the film industry.

Together, the Bergen brothers aspire to bring Integrity & Imagination to their work. Their shared heritage as descendants of the settlers in their script gives them both a unique responsibility and privilege: to tell this story with the authority of family and the skill of professionals.
